China and Russia are beating the United States in the race to send people to Mars, and NASA’s target date of 2033 is looking like a long shot.

That assessment reflects a failure to invest in the research and development of nuclear propulsion systems needed to carry humans to Mars. And the propulsion is only one of three major areas in which U.S. efforts remain deficient, according to a senior NASA official who testified alongside Myers, while Russia and China have conducted more focused investments in the novel technology.

?When you look at all of that, and you ask about the technology development requirement, from where we are today to launching a crewed mission, we saw that as a tremendous challenge and possibly unobtainable,? Dr. Roger Myers, who co-chaired the Committee on Space Nuclear Propulsion Technologies for the National Academy of Sciences, told House lawmakers Wednesday. ?Likely, likely unobtainable, by 2033.?

GENERAL: SPACE FORCE RACING ‘TO STAY AHEAD OF A GROWING THREAT’ FROM CHINA AND RUSSIA

?Our strategic competitors, including China, are indeed aggressively investing in a wide range of space technologies, including nuclear power and propulsion to fulfill their ambitions for sustained human lunar presence, as well as Martian and deep space science missions,? NASA senior adviser Bhavya Lal told a House Science subcommittee. ?The United States needs to move at a fast pace to stay competitive and to remain a leader in the global space community.?

Lal specified that detailed insights into China?s research plans are ?hard to come by,? but she emphasized that Beijing has established a ?very aggressive space development program.? They had a more specific sense of how Russia?s space program seems to have outstripped their U.S. counterparts.

?Russia has a significant nuclear electric propulsion development program,? Myers said. ?I could not comment on how far along they are. I don’t have that kind of insight. It does seem to be more advanced than what we’re doing today.?

Chinese officials have identified 2033 as the year that they hope to send Chinese spacefarers to Mars, the first of several missions intended to involve the construction of a permanent base on the planet. NASA officials touted the goal of a 2033 mission to Mars as recently as 2019, when then-Administrator Jim Bridenstine told lawmakers that an expedited return to the moon could hasten a mission to Mars, but Lal tapped the brakes on those ambitions.

?Deep space transport is just one piece of getting to Mars; there’s also the entry, descent, and landing ? which is very, very difficult, and we have not invested much in it at all,? she said, before underscoring the risks to the astronauts on the spacecraft. ?And we need to make sure that the environmental control and life support systems can keep them alive for two to three years.?

?There’s huge amounts of galactic and cosmic radiation that astronauts would be exposed to and we need to understand the impact of the radiation on the human body,? she added.

Such assessments disappointed Rep. Ed Perlmutter, a Colorado Democrat, who resisted the idea that the U.S. space industry has failed to capitalize on other breakthroughs.

?Between the scientific community, the engineering community, the technical community, we can do that,? he said. ?Four years ago or five years ago, we had a couple senior people from NASA … saying, ?2033 ? the orbital mechanics is good. That gives us a 15-year lead time, and, yeah, we can do it.??

Myers reminded the subcommittee that ?no currently available nuclear reactor fuels can provide the required temperatures to meet the required performance or engine life,? as he put it in his opening statement. He also told them ?technology to store liquid hydrogen in space for the required missions does not exist? and that NASA needs to enhance the capabilities required even to test nuclear-thermal propulsion systems.

?We need to make some fundamental progress on the technologies before we start the mission itself,? he said. ?So, we do need to establish the infrastructure required at the technology level, and then the ground infrastructure and the space infrastructure, before we can really start the mission.?

Lal reminded lawmakers that the space race isn?t just a vanity project, but one with wide-ranging consequences for the balance of power on Earth.

?They represent the type of investment that could help the U.S. maintain its global technological edge at a time when more countries around the world seek to fulfill space exploration objectives,? she said in her opening statement. ?Nuclear power systems that could be used on the moon could be developed within the decade. Nuclear propulsion capabilities will cost more and take longer ? realizing these capabilities would require sustained commitment and substantial investment over the next 10-20 years.?

These are statements that take place after during the day the head of the Government met with the PCP and the Left Bloc to try to make the Budget viable. Meetings that ended without an agreement.

Prime Minister meets again today with Left parties to negotiate the Budget.
On the side of the communists, Jerónimo de Sousa says that until the vote in general there is time to find concrete answers to the country’s problems. Before the Left Block, the government put forward proposals for the National Health Service, but refuses to mess with labor legislation and Social Security.

“We will continue to work. I am confident that we have a good Budget and that it can naturally be improved in the Assembly of the Republic,” declared the PS secretary general at the entrance to the meeting.

Before the young socialists, the PS secretary general defended that his government’s budget proposal has as its main objectives the post-pandemic economic recovery of covid-19, the improvement of income through the increase in salaries, pensions and social benefits. , the strengthening of public services, namely health, but also the existence of certain accounts.

In a first allusion to the fiscal consolidation measures planned for next year, António Costa argued that it is precisely these deficit and debt reduction policies ?which then allow us to do what needs to be done?.

?Having the right accounts is key to keeping interest rates low, to preserving the country’s international confidence and credibility. This is an invaluable asset that under no circumstances can we lose or put at risk, because it really means sacrificing our future.” declared the leader of the executive.

Earlier, in an allusion to the issue of the sustainability of the public Social Security system, the prime minister advocated that “brutal investment” that took place “in the lay-off”, or in the increase in unemployment benefits during the covid-19 crisis, it would not have been possible ?if the country had not built a more robust Social Security system in the previous five years?.

?A Social Security that guarantees your generation that it will be here to pay the pensions that today’s young people will be entitled to tomorrow?, he added, receiving applause from the audience.
No Red Lines in Budget
During the day of Tuesday, on the sidelines of the tribute to Aristides de Sousa Mendes, the prime minister indicated that he accepts to negotiate anything to approve the State Budget. António Costa said that early elections would be the most radical solution of all and considered it “irrational” for the country to now live a political drama.

Focus on young people and families with children
The PS secretary general defended that the budget proposal has as its immediate objective the recovery from the post-covid-19 crisis, but also betting on the future with the reinforcement of support for young people and families with children.

António Costa took these positions at a meeting with JS, in Campo Grande, Lisbon, in a speech that lasted about 30 minutes, in which he also referred to the need to remove obstacles to the access of young people to a set of regulated professions.

“This budget is very central to young people and families with children. It seeks to respond to the need to recover from the wounds of the crisis caused by covid-19 and boost it to give strength to the recovery of the economy, but it has to do it with our eyes. positions in the future,” declared the socialist leader.

According to António Costa, “there is only one way to support it with an eye to the future”.

“It is really to support the young generations and families who, having children, are raising the generations of the future. Also for this reason, this Budget is a good Budget and deserves to be approved in general (on the 27th) and in a final global vote “he maintained.

After the first speech of the session, which was in charge of the secretary general of JS, Miguel Costa Matos, the PS leader highlighted measures present in the Budget for next year, such as the expansion of the Youth IRS, the increase in salaries at the beginning of the career of senior technicians from the State sector, as well as the reinforcement of the hiring of young cadres for the public administration and “new steps” in terms of free day care centers.

Regarding the Education and Higher Education sectors, António Costa spoke about the program for the recovery of learning after a year and a half of covid-19 and promised to reinforce support for scholarships in the second cycle of studies (masters and doctorates), as well as the National Student Accommodation Plan.

In terms of employment, the prime minister highlighted, above all, the issues of regulation of telework and the fight against precariousness, adding that the next Council of Ministers will approve the Agenda for Decent Work, with measures to protect workers, namely those who are. to the service of electronic platforms or temporary work companies.

And it was in this chapter, referring to matters related to the State Budget proposals, that António Costa received one of the greatest applauses from the audience of young socialists, when he referred to the amendment to the revision of the regime of professional orders and regulated professions.

“Young people must have the right to freedom of access to professionals, professional orders have a role to play, but they do not limit competition or prohibit access to the profession to young people who want to enter it. They cannot also demand exorbitant payments for Bar exams, nor impose conditions to limit access to the profession,” he said.

The first trailer for Sony?s upcoming live-action adaptation of Naughty Dog?s video game franchise Uncharted is rumored to drop this week.

The first trailer for Sony?s upcoming live-action movie adaptation of Naughty Dog?s video game franchise, Uncharted, is rumored to drop this week. Uncharted was stuck in development purgatory for a large part of the past decade. In 2020, it was announced that Venom director, Ruben Fleischer, would helm the film with Art Marcum and Matt Holloway (Iron Man) writing the screenplay. Production on the film took place throughout 2020 and, following multiple delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic, will finally release in theaters on February 18, 2022.

Essentially serving as a prequel to the games, Uncharted will follow Tom Holland as fortune hunter Nathan Drake alongside Mark Wahlberg as his mentor Victor ?Sully? Sullivan. The film will focus on the early days of the pair?s adventures together and also star Antonio Banderas, Tati Gabrielle, and Sophia Taylor Ali as Chloe Frazer, a love interest of Nathan?s in the games. Earlier this year, Sony premiered the first footage from the film at CinemaCon including Sully at an auction, Nathan entering a cave-like area and then falling out of a cargo plane ? images reminiscent of the video game franchise.

According to a scoop via Daniel ?DanielIRPK? Richtman on Patreon (via Comicbook), Sony Pictures will apparently release the first trailer for Uncharted this Thursday, October 21st. That being said, fans should take this information at face value as no official information about the trailer’s release has been announced by Sony. However, with the movie set to release in a matter of months, it would make sense for a trailer to drop soon.

Holland?s other blockbuster, Marvel Studios/Sony?s upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home, has likely influenced how Sony is approaching promotion for Uncharted. Now that some of the hype surrounding No Way Home?s first trailer has died slightly down, Sony could build on Holland?s momentum by teasing yet another blockbuster right before No Way Home?s rumored second trailer and then release on December 17th. If No Way Home is the end of Holland?s Spider-Man franchise (but not his tenure as the webslinger), Uncharted could represent his next series of films.

Plot details for the Uncharted movie have been kept under wraps, and it remains to be seen if it can live up to its Indiana Jones-caliber source material. The film’s casting has been criticized by some fans, and the first footage sees Nathan thrown into the realm of fortune-hunting rather than eased into it. If the film commits the recurring cardinal sin of video game adaptations and prioritizes the action over pacing, character, and overall story, Uncharted could be in trouble. Longtime fans will inevitably get a better sense of what the film has to offer when its trailer drops (hopefully) very soon.

Our group also has a further 30 hotels in the UK in the pipeline over the next five years ?.

The hotel’s interior design reflects the rich culture of the area’s historic industry, inspired as it is by the Huguenot silk weavers who settled in Spitalfields in the seventeenth century. In fact, the rooms and the dining areas feature floral motifs and fabrics that recall the techniques used by the Huguenots themselves. To celebrate Whitechapel’s contemporary art scene, artworks created by neighborhood artists also enrich the hotel’s public spaces.

Local inspiration continues in the hotel’s f & b premises. Dishes that recall the East End are for example served at Penny Squares, the hotel restaurant, which finds inspiration from the upholstery technique in the textile industry. The Freedom Café, named after the Freedom Press Publishing House in Whitechapel High Street, is instead designed to relax, work or socialize over a coffee or cocktail still inspired by the East End. Guests can also enjoy daily tastings, with appetizers and drinks from local distilleries, craft brewers and wineries. Finally, a must to visit is the splendid Florattica terrace on the roof of the hotel, which opens early next year, with views of St Paul’s Cathedral and London, as well as an offer of fine dining and a selection of drinks.

Half a century ago, we as humans made our way to the moon for the first time. For those who were alive at the time, it?s likely a moment deeply ingrained in their memory, and inspired generations of kids to want to grow up and become astronauts.

Another figure who inspired such career aspirations is the fictional Captain James T. Kirk, captain of the USS Enterprise, and last week, the man who originated the iconic ?Star Trek? role made his way into space for the first time ? becoming the oldest person to travel into space at 90 years old.

With so many of the country?s richest people creating their own competing spaceflight companies, traveling to space is not so much a fantasy only to be achieved by the smartest minds, but a vacation possibility for everyday people in the not-too-distant future.

Blue Origin, the spaceflight company started by Jeff Bezos, made its first mission into space in July, and last week it made another trip into space, carrying Captain Kirk himself, William Shatner.

With him before and after the launch was Don DiCostanzo, CEO and co-founder of electric bike company Pedego, of which Shatner is a sponsor.

?I was very nervous about the whole idea of this because it?s just unbelievable from the human mind that this rocket ship can go up 350,000 feet above the Earth, which is 70 miles straight out and drop back down. It goes up and peaks at 2,500 miles per hour and drops back down at 2,500 miles per hour and lands on the Earth like a feather,? said DiCostanzo.

DiCostanzo didn?t go up in the rocket himself, but got to witness the whole thing from the friends and family podium that was about a mile away. He compared getting to watch the event with watching John Glenn become the first American to orbit Earth when he was a kid.

?You know ?one small step for man, one large leap for mankind.? I think this was that kind of moment. This past week, when William Shatner at 90 years old stepped on ? I think he?s done more for space travel than any single person has. Now Jeff Bezos fronted the whole thing and funded the whole thing. But Bill as Captain Kirk, having been into space being the new frontier, and then actually gets to live it.?

He explained that actually the weekend right before they made the trip to the launch site, he attended New York ComicCon with Shatner, so he quite literally went from fantasy to reality.

?He is the most popular star at ComicCon. The lines are longer for his signature and his photo than anybody else at ComicCon, probably by a factor of at least two from my observation. And then he went and did it in reality. He took this fantasy that everyone has of him and he made it reality.?

DiCostanzo added: ?A 90-year-old just went up in this space and came back. That?s going to change the world as far as people being inspired for what can happen going to space.?

We?re already to the point where November’s cornucopia of titles is upon us, and it?s beginning to look a lot the holiday season. Plus, Red Notice rings in a bunch of criminally good-looking action, while Big Mouth: Season 5 continues to wade through the awkwardness of those raunchy teenage years.

In addition, the king will return as Tiger King 2 catches us all up on the antics that made lockdown a little more bearable and Halle Berry brings a movie to streaming, as well. The dispatch published on October 12 left little room for doubt: “The Editions de Fallois announce their cessation of activity after the departure of Joël Dicker”, wrote Agence France Presse. It even turns out to be quite far from this great classic of editorial life: the collapse of a publishing house when its star author abandons it.

In fact, if Joël Dicker had indeed announced in March that he was going to create his own structure and publish his next books there, and if the publishing house founded in 1987 by Bernard de Fallois (1926-2018) indicated in a press release that it would close shop on December 31, 2021, these two facts do not appear in that order.

Olivier Nora, CEO of Editions Grasset, De Fallois shareholders at 34%, is amused: ?It is not the departure of Joël Dicker which causes the closure. It’s the opposite. When, in 2020, Dicker chose to publish his new novel at De Fallois, The enigma of room 622, he made the house last beyond what Bernard expected. “ Because, he adds, “We have always known that he wanted his house to close after his death”.

A codicil in the publisher’s will

This is confirmed by all the relatives who agreed to testify, the economist Jean-Claude Casanova, his friend for more than sixty years, as the former director of the Pocket Book, Dominique Goust, who became CEO of De Fallois in the death of the founder, or the lawyer Marc Mermoz, his executor – and Joël Dicker himself. Moreover, a codicil in the publisher’s will gave this desire the authority of a final will. “In case I disappear before having put an end to the publishing company, I thank master Marc Mermoz and Dominique Goust (?) for having agreed to carry out all the necessary operations in my place ?, wrote Bernard de Fallois.

Also Dominique Goust felt he had no choice. “I arrived with a mission to ensure that the closure takes place under the best conditions”, he explains, like Marc Mermoz, who specifies: ?Bernard de Fallois intended, in particular for the staff, that this proceed without brutality. “ Both stress that the will did not impose any time limits, but it was clear to everyone that it had to be quick. “Within two years”, considers Olivier Nora. ” And then, says Dominique Goust, Joël Dicker arrived with this new project. “

World Cup every two years, the frond of those opposed to the proposal of the Fifa. And now the individual national football federations, but also the continental confederations such as Uefa and Conmebol, are threatening to leave FIFA as an ‘extrema ratio’.

More than a dozen federations have reported that such a drastic move could be possible if the Fifa decided to go ahead with the organization of its showcase event every two years from 2026 onwards. There Uefa and the Conmebol South American, who have most of the best players and leagues, are opposed to plans first presented as part of a feasibility study by FIFA’s head of global development, Arsene Wenger, the former Arsenal manager. The International Olympic Committee also expressed concern over the hypothesis that a biennial World Cup would harm other sports.

The Uefa president, Alexander Ceferin, threatened a boycott of the World Cup and the Danish football federation mentioned leaving FIFA in a statement last week after Nordic associations joined the broad opposition. “In the worst case and as a last resort, it cannot be ruled out that it could lead the associations to give up FIFA due to protest and lack of desire for the new structure,” said Danish football chief Jesper Moeller.

Fifa will hold a board meeting on Wednesday with the issue on the agenda. Fifa president reportedly on Tuesday Gianni Infantino held talks with European associations on a revised match schedule from 2024 onwards. According to the statute of the Fifa, members may leave the governing body at the end of a calendar year with six months’ notice. They could continue to play in Uefa events but not in Fifa competitions such as the World Cup. Fifa has said it aims to make the game more global, but Spanish league boss Javier Tebas told Germany’s Sport Bild magazine that a biennial World Cup “will destroy the entire football ecosystem.” «You have to see football as a global entity. Fifa makes football more elitist, not global, ?he said.

VRdirect (www.vrdirect.com), a three-year old startup software company that has brought VR solutions to some of Europe’s biggest companies, has named former SpaceX and Lucasfilm executive David Anderman to its Board of Overseers, symbolising its desire to rapidly expand within the North American market.

“The combination of business and legal expertise make Mr. Anderman a valued new addition to VRdirect’s board,” said Dr. Rolf Illenberger, VRdirect’s Managing Director. “His background with ambitious projects, the ability and opportunity to connect us with major players in the technology space and several years of background in the virtual reality field, will certainly help as we build a foundation and business case within the United States and elsewhere across the globe.”

Anderman spent 16 years at Lucasfilm, starting as the junior lawyer and eventually becoming Chief Operating Officer. He negotiated the $4.05 billion sale of Lucasfilm to The Walt Disney Company in 2012. Anderman would then serve as Chief Business Officer and General Counsel for Jaunt, a leading platform for the production and distributing of cinematic VR, AR, and MR experiences, scaling the business from a dozen employees to 125+ and raising $125 million from Disney, Creative Artists Agency, China Media Capital, and Shanghai Media Group. Jaunt was later acquired by Verizon.

At SpaceX, Anderman served as General Counsel, managing all legal functions of the company and supporting the global rollout of Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite internet business, and the launch of NASA astronauts to the International Space Station–the first-ever launch of humans by a private company– in 2020.

“I believe VRdirect’s B2B focus, which has proven in their client relations throughout Europe, is unique to the VR market and has tremendous potential worldwide,” Anderman said of joining VRdirect’s board. “I am excited to join the leadership and provide expertise that should prove valuable in a global scaling phase.”

VRdirect enables corporations, agencies and content creators the ability to create, manage and publish VR projects in a matter of minutes, to almost any smartphone, with a simple drag-and-drop interface that requires no pre-existing skills or experience. Projects can be published in and updated in real-time and distributed to any device globally using VRdirect’s Cloud Infrastructure.

In just 36 months, VRdirect has built up experience working with some of Europe’s biggest companies, including Siemens, Porsche, Deutsche Telekom (T-Mobile in the States), and Nestlé on everything from white-labeled B2C VR platforms and interactive showrooms, to onboarding programs and museum tours. While the metaverse has focused on dynamic person-to-person user experience, VRdirect has focused on practical solutions to pressing corporate needs during the COVID 19 pandemic.

VRdirect’s use cases range from Virtual Exhibits to Training & Education, and Marketing & Sales use cases. The platform, much like a PowerPoint or Word, can be used across an entire organization using 360° images or videos or 3D software. VRdirect lets users create interactive experiences and distribute them to VR apps on iOS, Android, Oculus or any website instantaneously–meaning that a personal or corporate VR library can be built in no time.

VRdirect will make its first North American in-person appearance at AWE USA from November 9-11, 2021 (Booth #619) in Santa Clara, California. Mr. Anderman will be available for meetings and interviews at the event. For more information, visit www.vrdirect.com.
