Antiviral drugs such as Tamiflu have been prescribed for decades to treat flu symptoms in people at risk for serious complications.

Researchers found when these medications were used with antibody therapy, the combination was more effective than either approach alone: the antibodies were significantly more efficient at killing infected cells and the drugs were more potent.

The findings, published today in the journal Cell Reports Medicine, could inform new approaches to protecting high-risk groups, including the elderly and children during an emerging influenza pandemic, the researchers say.

?Antibody therapies were used to treat COVID-19, and in theory they could be used to treat flu as a new therapeutic approach,? says Matthew Miller, a lead author of the study and director of McMaster?s Michael G. DeGroote Institute for Infectious Disease Research.

?We really need to have better strategies to protect people from flu pandemics because right now we don?t have anything,? he says. ?Our seasonal vaccines don?t protect us. And we?ve learned that we can?t make them quickly enough to vaccinate everybody if a new pandemic were to emerge.?

Miller and his team have studied broadly neutralizing antibodies ? which fend off a wide range of respiratory viruses ? for over 10 years. They are examining how these antibodies could be tapped to protect against all strains of flu, in their urgent pursuit of a universal flu vaccine.

For the study, which was conducted on mice, researchers combined antibodies with antiviral drugs. They found the drugs improved the virus-fighting properties of the antibodies, which work by binding to the surface of an infected cell then triggering our immune system to kill the cell before the virus can spread.

?The mechanism behind how the drug and the antibody therapies work together is very unique and surprising,? explains Ali Zhang, lead author of the research paper and a doctoral student in McMaster?s Department of Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences. ?This approach allows us to both disable a crucial component of the virus, and also boost our own immune system to better track down and prevent the spread of the infection.?

The urgent need for effective therapies for elderly patients was evident during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, people over the age of 65 accounted for a staggering 80 per cent of pandemic-related deaths across the country in 2020.

?One of the places where antibody-based therapies could be particularly useful is nursing homes, which are at very high risk of flu outbreaks. The elderly are the poorest responders to vaccines, yet need them the most,? says Miller, who is also a principal investigator with Canada?s Global Nexus for Pandemics and Biological Threats, which is based at McMaster.

Researchers also report using a combination therapy may extend the life of current antiviral drugs because viruses are less likely to become resistant to such drugs when delivered in conjunction with an antibody therapy.

Influenza is one of the most serious threats to global health because of its tendency to cause pandemics.

In just over 100 years, at least five pandemics have occurred, which include the Spanish Flu of 1918-19, killing roughly 50 million people ? 3 to 5 per cent of the world?s population at the time.

Everything the members did after parting ways with Arena Hash. (Facebook)

‘Hash sand’, is the band that marked history in the eighties and nineties in the history of Peruvian rock. Initially led by Pedro Suarez-Vertizon the bottom, Patricio Suarez-Vertiz, in the battery, Arthur Pomar Jr. Y alex kornhuber on the guitar

The quartet was born in the classrooms of the school ‘Maria Reyna’ of San Isidro, in Lima, in 1986. The origin of the name of the band occurred when Pedro wanted a compound name for the group and Alex asked that one of the words be related to the beach, sea and similar topics.

They thought of ‘Arena Blanca’, ‘Arena Azul’, but then the word Hash came up and Pedro sounded like an English word. Right in the middle of the classroom, Alex and Pedro came up with the name ‘Arena Hash’ and they loved it. Under that name they sent their first cassette to local radio stations.

In 1987, Alex Kornhuber left for personal reasons and entered Christian Meier to play the keyboards and do the choirs. At the end of that year they released their first album entitledSand Hash, the first single from the album was ‘crab‘ (Shake) and the second single was titled ‘When the bed spins me‘ that became number one in the different radio stations in Lima.

From that first album the songs also sounded: ‘I caught a cold in Brazil’, ‘Stress’, ‘I won’t change’ and ‘Break – ears’. In 1989 Arena Hash performed a series of concerts both in Lima and in the provinces, filling stadiums, coliseums and was one of the few groups that became idols of the crowds.

In 1991 appears the second record production of Arena Hash entitled ‘oh oh oh. In 1995, Del Archivo de Arena Hash goes on sale, which is very likely to be the reissue of their first album, which includes songs by Pedro Suarez-Vertiz.

In May 1993, Arena Hash gave their last concert with Frágil, opening for the band Froeigner. After this, the end of the group came to give way to future personal projects of each of its members.

Patricio Suarez-Vertiz commented in an interview for the newspaper Peru 21 that the musical relationship of Arena Hash came to an end because each of the members wanted to do different musical genres and that it was better to leave the group there and when they wanted to return they could do so.

“They had already matured musically and each one had a style that they wanted to do… Pedro wanted rock and roll, I wanted to do disco dance (Patricio). Christian wanted to do something more pop and Aturo rap. Put that together so how do we mix it? And what happened with Arena was what happens with an intelligent couple: we have differences and before we end up fighting, we better separate, “Patrick explained.

Patricio Suarez-Vertiz Alva

She went to live in Miami in 2003 and pursue her singing career. But first she dedicated herself to selling houses, from there she returned to singing, put together a band in English and released an album in English. She visited festivals, events, television channels, radio stations in Miami. Years later he finished the band and began to visit Peru, he began to play the songs of Arena Hash and his own.

An analysis by climate scientists at the University of California, Berkeley, finds that the apparent temperature, or heat index, calculated by meteorologists and the National Weather Service (NWS) to indicate how hot it feels ? taking into account the humidity ? underestimates the perceived temperature for the most sweltering days we?re now experiencing, sometimes by more than 20 degrees Fahrenheit.

The finding has implications for those who suffer through these heat waves, since the heat index is a measure of how the body deals with heat when the humidity is high, and sweating becomes less effective at cooling us down. Sweating and flushing, where blood is diverted to capillaries close to the skin to dissipate heat, plus shedding clothes, are the main ways humans adapt to hot temperatures.

A higher heat index means that the human body is more stressed during these heat waves than public health officials may realize, the researchers say. The NWS currently considers a heat index above 103 to be dangerous, and above 125 to be extremely dangerous.

?Most of the time, the heat index that the National Weather Service is giving you is just the right value. It?s only in these extreme cases where they?re getting the wrong number,? said David Romps, UC Berkeley professor of earth and planetary science. ?Where it matters is when you start to map the heat index back onto physiological states and you realize, oh, these people are being stressed to a condition of very elevated skin blood flow where the body is coming close to running out of tricks for compensating for this kind of heat and humidity. So, we?re closer to that edge than we thought we were before.?

Romps and graduate student Yi-Chuan Lu detailed their analysis in a paper accepted by the journal Environmental Research Letters and posted online Aug. 12.

The heat index was devised in 1979 by a textile physicist, Robert Steadman, who created simple equations to calculate what he called the relative ?sultriness? of warm and humid, as well as hot and arid, conditions during the summer. He saw it as a complement to the wind chill factor commonly used in the winter to estimate how cold it feels.

His model took into account how humans regulate their internal temperature to achieve thermal comfort under different external conditions of temperature and humidity ? by consciously changing the thickness of clothing or unconsciously adjusting respiration, perspiration and blood flow from the body?s core to the skin.

In his model, the apparent temperature under ideal conditions ? an average-sized person in the shade with unlimited water ? is how hot someone would feel if the relative humidity were at a comfortable level, which Steadman took to be a vapor pressure of 1,600 pascals.

For example, at 70% relative humidity and 68 F ? which is often taken as average humidity and temperature ? a person would feel like it?s 68 F. But at the same humidity and 86 F, it would feel like 94 F.

The heat index has since been adopted widely in the United States, including by the NWS, as a useful indicator of people?s comfort. But Steadman left the index undefined for many conditions that are now becoming increasingly common. For example, for a relative humidity of 80%, the heat index is not defined for temperatures above 88 F or below 59 F. Today, temperatures routinely rise above 90 F for weeks at a time in some areas, including the Midwest and Southeast.

To account for these gaps in Steadman?s chart, meteorologists extrapolated into these areas to get numbers that, Romps said, are correct most of the time, but not based on any understanding of human physiology.

?There?s no scientific basis for these numbers,? Romps said.

He and Lu set out to extend Steadman?s work so that the heat index is accurate at all temperatures and all humidities between zero and 100%.

?The original table had a very short range of temperature and humidity and then a blank region where Steadman said the human model failed,? Lu said. ?Steadman had the right physics. Our aim was to extend it to all temperatures so that we have a more accurate formula.?

One condition under which Steadman?s model breaks down is when people perspire so much that sweat pools on the skin. At that point, his model incorrectly had the relative humidity at the skin surface exceeding 100%, which is physically impossible.

?It was at that point where this model seems to break, but it?s just the model telling him, hey, let sweat drip off the skin. That?s all it was,? Romps said. ?Just let the sweat drop off the skin.?

That and a few other tweaks to Steadman?s equations yielded an extended heat index that agrees with the old heat index 99.99% of the time, Romps said, but also accurately represents the apparent temperature for regimes outside those Steadman originally calculated. When he originally published his apparent temperature scale, he considered these regimes too rare to worry about, but high temperatures and humidities are becoming increasingly common because of climate change.

Romps and Lu published the revised heat index equation earlier this year. In the most recent paper, they apply the extended heat index to the top 100 heat waves that occurred between 1984 and 2020. The researchers find mostly minor disagreements with what the NWS reported at the time, but also some extreme situations where the NWS heat index was way off.

One surprise was that seven of the 10 most physiologically stressful heat waves over that time period were in the Midwest ? mostly in Illinois, Iowa and Missouri ? not the Southeast, as meteorologists assumed. The largest discrepancies between the NWS heat index and the extended heat index were seen in a wide swath, from the Great Lakes south to Louisiana.

During the July 1995 heat wave in Chicago, for example, which killed at least 465 people, the maximum heat index reported by the NWS was 135 F, when it actually felt like 154 F. The revised heat index at Midway Airport, 141 F, implies that people in the shade would have experienced blood flow to the skin that was 170% above normal. The heat index reported at the time, 124 F, implied only a 90% increase in skin blood flow. At some places during the heat wave, the extended heat index implies that people would have experienced an increase of 820% above normal skin blood flow.

?I?m no physiologist, but a lot of things happen to the body when it gets really hot,? Romps said. ?Diverting blood to the skin stresses the system because you?re pulling blood that would otherwise be sent to internal organs and sending it to the skin to try to bring up the skin?s temperature. The approximate calculation used by the NWS, and widely adopted, inadvertently downplays the health risks of severe heat waves.?

Physiologically, the body starts going haywire when the skin temperature rises to equal the body?s core temperature, typically taken as 98.6 F. After that, the core temperature begins to increase. The maximum sustainable core temperature is thought to be 107 F ? the threshold for heat death. For the healthiest of individuals, that threshold is reached at a heat index of 200 F.

Luckily, humidity tends to decrease as temperature increases, so Earth is unlikely to reach those conditions in the next few decades. Less extreme, though still deadly, conditions are nevertheless becoming common around the globe.

?A 200 F heat index is an upper bound of what is survivable,? Romps said. ?But now that we?ve got this model of human thermoregulation that works out at these conditions, what does it actually mean for the future habitability of the United States and the planet as a whole? There are some frightening things we are looking at.?

The work was supported by the U.S. Department of Energy?s Atmospheric System Research program through the Office of Science?s Biological and Environmental Research program (DE-AC02-05CH11231).

¿The Godfather aún brillaría sin Al Pacino y Marlon Brando?

Phillip Seymour Hoffman – Along Came Polly (2004)

Margot Robbie – Suicide Squad (2016)

Tom Hanks – The Ladykillers (2004)

Goldthwaite Higginson Dorr en ?The Ladykillers?

(Buena Vista Pictures)

James McAvoy – Split (2016)

Kristen Stewart – American Ultra (2015)

Thomas Hayden Church – Spider-Man 3 (2007)

John C Reilly – Kong: Skull Island (2017)

Alan Rickman – Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991)

Martin Freeman – The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012)

(New Line Cinema)

Max von Sydow – Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (2011)

Phil Hartman – Jingle All the Way (1996)

No logró contener todas las grietas en la miserable comedia navideña Jingle All the Way.

Leonardo DiCaprio – The Great Gatsby (2013)

(Warner Bros)

Anthony Hopkins – Transformers: The Last Knight (2017)

Oscar Isaac – Sucker Punch (2011)

Adam Driver – Star Wars: Episode IX ? The Rise of Skywalker (2019)

(LucasFilm)

Ewan McGregor – Star Wars: Episode III ? Revenge of the Sith (2005)

Michael K Williams – Assassin’s Creed (2016)

Florence Pugh – Black Widow (2021)

Matthew Lillard – Scooby Doo (2002)

The compact disc was, at the time, a revolution in the music industry. The new generations are close to not knowing this format that, this Wednesday, August 17, turns 40.

Despite some theories that the CD was invented before the 1980s, the reality is that Philips and Sony They jointly developed the CD, making it commercially known in 1982. From that moment on, all the record companies stopped producing vinyl, leaving it as part of the past. What’s more, all the recordings made on vinyl and 75rpm discs were released on CD, with remasters. Vinyl became the history of sound music.

It is made of polycarbonate plastic, and a protective layer of aluminum. The compact music disc has a standardized CDDA optical technology, a duration of 74 minutes, 1.2 millimeters thick and 12 centimeters in diameter. As a curiosity, the duration was fixed so that Beethoven’s 9th Symphony could be played in its entirety.

The incursion of the CD into the market caused an unpredictable revolution, offering greater resistance than the vinyl that preceded it and a much higher sound quality.

On August 17, 1982, it was manufactured at the Polygram plant in Hannover, The Visitorsthe first album of ABBA in this format, by the electronic company Philips. It would mean a digital and cultural revolution, changing the way music was heard. Above all, when in 1984, Sony introduced the first Discman to listen to CDs in a portable way. In October 1982, the first record of the Sony company was released in Japan, 52nd Streetby Billy Joel.

The compact disc was slowly taking off and, in 1985, an emblematic group, Dire Straitstook out the album Brothers in Armswhich was the first exclusively digital recording.

Between the years 1982 and 2007, around 200 billion compact discs were produced, until their decline began with the appearance of MP3 and other common music players today.

The technology developed rapidly and gave rise to different devices such as CD-ROM, CD-RW, DVD and Blu-Ray.

The CD was the leading format in the music industry in the 1990s, peaking at $13.2 billion in annual sales in the year 2000. Sales, in this format, increased in 2021 for the first time since 2004. The data refer to the United States, but the trend shows that they can be extrapolated to the rest of the world. Specifically, more than 46 million CDs were sold in the US, with revenues of 584 million dollars.

However, the sale of vinyl has been growing for fifteen years since the decline that began in 1994 and today generates more income than music CDs. It is true that it is not as practical as streaming and digital music, but it is still a pleasure for more and more users.

The bad relationship between Amazon and the United States Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has added a new chapter. Is that the company accuses the US government agency of harassing its founder, Jeff Bezosand other high-profile officials in an investigation related to Amazon Prime memberships.

The investigation in question is not exactly new, since it has been underway since March 2021. But what has generated a new short circuit between the parties has been the FTC’s decision to issue subpoenas for twenty employees and executives. Among the latter is not only the aforementioned Bezos, but also the current CEO of Amazon, Andy Jassy, ??and the former vice president of Prime, Greg Greeley, just to mention a few.

Amazon is asking that the subpoenas of Jeff Bezos and other executives be annulled or limited, because it believes that they have submitted a large amount of documentation and that “they have not identified a reason” why their testimonies are necessary. But the company goes further and claims that the FTC’s practices are “unduly onerous and calculated to have no purpose other than to harass Amazon’s most senior executives and disrupt their business operations.”

Without a doubt, this represents one more point of conflict for Amazon and the Federal Trade Commission, whose relationship has been far from the best in recent times. Let’s not forget that, like Facebook, the firm founded by Jeff Bezos challenged the appointment of Lina Khan as chair of the FTC and requested that it refrain from getting involved in proceedings related to Amazon. Why? Because prior to his arrival at the US government agency, Khan gained recognition for his criticism of the business models of large corporations that resulted in anti-competitive practices, and for his statements against Amazon in particular.

The FTC is going after Jeff Bezos and other Amazon executives

The discord investigation, in this case, relates to Amazon Prime. The FTC is looking into whether Amazon used deceptive tactics as part of the membership registration and cancellation processand if they have been transferred to other of its services, such as the cases of Amazon Music, Kindle Unlimited and Audible, to name a few.

As reported Business Insider, the agency intends to find out if “ambiguous language and confusing designs” were used to register buyers without their consent, or to prevent them from being able to unsubscribe easily. But that would not be all, since they also want to know if Jeff Bezos and company could have used “ephemeral messaging” services to discuss issues related to this situation.

Faced with this situation, Amazon has taken its claws out. The company says that for more than a year it has been working diligently on FTC requests, producing about 37,000 pages of documents, among other requests. But he says subpoenas sent to company executives and employees in recent months, known formally as Civil Investigative Demands (CIDs) are “unjust and impracticable”.

We’ll see how this story goes. The truth is that the Federal Trade Commission seems to be going all out both against Amazon and against who made it what it is today: Jeff Bezos.
