This month, Alfred Hitchcock‘s legendary slasher precursor Psycho arrives on Peacock. Longtime fans will be able to watch the film all over again and newcomers to Hitchcock’s dark world will have a chance to experience the film’s mayhem for the first time. Even if you’ve never seen it, just about anyone with any level of familiarity with the horror world has heard of Psycho, because it’s simply that impactful. From its influence on future horror releases to its style choices to that iconic shower scene, it still ranks as one of the best pieces of horror cinema ever crafted, and that’s worth celebrating even decades later.

Thinking about all of that as it relates to Psycho got us thinking: What other films should join it on the list of the greatest horror movies ever made? It’s an entirely subjective question, of course, and everyone has their own picks for the best of the best, but when you think about influence, impact, and sheer scare value, these are the films that rise above the rest. These are (for now, anyway), the best horror films of all time, in chronological order.

Nosferatu (1922)

Yes, F.W. Murnau’s legendary (unauthorized) Dracula adaptation is important. In terms of its impact on generations of moviegoers, movie scholars, and movie makers, it’s one of the most vital horror films ever made, so naturally, it’s on the list. But it’s not just about cultural cache. Even now, more than a century after it was made, Nosferatu is just plain scary. Shots of Max Schreck standing wide-eyed in the corridors of his ruined castle can still make your hair stand on end no matter how many times you’ve seen them, and that’s an incredible achievement for one of the most-referenced works of cinematic art ever.

Bride of Frankenstein (1935)

After the formula of the Universal Monster movies was established in the 1930s, the time came for filmmakers to go back and start to play with it, finding new ways to express the roles of the title characters and creatures which inhabited the world. With Bride of Frankenstein, James Whale took on the horror elements of his original film and dialed them into blackly comic territory, delivering a horror masterpiece that’s as funny and strange as it is genuinely creepy.

RELATED: Universal Monsters, ranked

Psycho (1960)

After years of successful Technicolor thrillers, Alfred Hitchcock got together with the crew from his TV series and shot an intimate, deeply disturbing black and white film set at a roadside motel, and made horror history in the process. Psycho is not the first slasher story, nor is it the first precursor to the slasher genre that would blossom 15 years later, but it is still one of the most impressively dread-filled meditations on a killer in cinema history. All these years later, even when you know the shocks are coming, they still land.

Black Sunday (1960)

The horror cinema of Italy would prove broadly, delightfully influential around the world throughout the 1970s and 1980s, and it arguably all starts with Mario Bava’s occult masterpiece. Featuring a tremendous villain performance by Barbara Steele, and some of the most beautiful photography of Bava’s entire career, Black Sunday remains one of Italy’s greatest genre cinema triumphs, and has influenced everyone from Dario Argento to Tim Burton.

The Haunting (1963)

Robert Wise’s adaptation of Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House is just one in a long line of new takes on not just the original story, but the formula perfected by that story. Like many films that followed, it’s the story of a group of people visiting a spooky old house to try and find evidence of ghosts, and getting more than they bargained for in the process. But no other film since The Haunting has been able to do it in such an achingly, dreadfully beautiful way. In Wise’s subtle hands, Hill House becomes a character in frightening new ways, and the film keeps your pulse high without ever revealing a single actual ghost.

Kwaidan (1964)

There’s no shortage of Japanese horror masterpieces in the world, but Masaki Kobayashi’s Kwaidan remains a masterpiece among masterpieces. Arguably the greatest horror anthology ever made, this epic film and the four ghost stories it contains is as terrifying as it spellbinding, and features some of the most beautiful photography in any horror film you’ve ever seen.

The Exorcist (1973)

I know, I know, The Exorcist is on ever “Best Horror Movies Ever” list in the same way that Citizen Kane is on every “Best Movies Ever” list, almost like it’s compulsory and not something we really think about anymore. But here’s the thing: William Friedkin’s possession masterpiece really is that good, from its haunting photography to its remarkable practical effects by Dick Smith and everything in between. It remains a truly disturbing, truly well-crafted, watershed moment for horror cinema.

The Wicker Man (1973)

The greatest folk horror movie ever made, Robin Hardy’s The Wicker Man has barely any violence, and very little in the way of gore. What it does have is an overwhelming, all-encompassing sense of dread tinged with haunting natural beauty and the unnerving power of its smiling villains. It’s a 90-minute, nail-biting buildup to one unforgettable ending, and even when you know that ending’s coming, its power isn’t diminished.

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)

Fans of Tobe Hooper’s 1974 classic about a group of youths who run afoul of a family or murderous Texas cannibals will talk to you all day about how the film’s reputation as a shocker isn’t earned, because there’s almost no blood, and no gore at all, in the movie. That’s true, but what makes Texas Chain Saw work isn’t just how effective it is at implied violence. It’s that in many cases, the film doesn’t need violence to be terrifying. Decades after its release, the scariest parts are often looks, screams, and the sense that we the viewer are trapped in the house with Leatherface and his kinfolk.

Jaws (1975)

Jaws is one of several major horror films that fans still argue over, not in terms of its greatness, but in terms of whether or not it actually fits the “horror” mold. Well, you can call it a thriller all you want, but Steven Spielberg’s breakthrough film about a New England town plagued by shark attacks is undeniably scary. From underwater jump scares to great creature effects and one of the most unsettling opening kills of all time, Jaws has horror in its soul, and that means it belongs here.

Dawn of the Dead (1978)

With Night of the Living Dead, George A. Romero essentially invented the modern zombie genre. With Dawn of the Dead a decade later, he cracked it wide open. Presented in vivid color and with often jaw-dropping scale, Romero’s sequel to his original black-and-white classic dials up everything about the first film to great effect, and is as frightening as it is fun.

Alien (1979)

Call it a creature feature, call it cosmic horror, call it a haunted house movie in space. Whatever you call it, Ridley Scott’s Alien remains what might be the best expression of sci-fi horror ever produced, and a deeply chilling experience even decades after its release. From Sigourney Weaver’s lead performance to H.R. Giger’s legendary xenomorph design, it’s a masterpiece through and through.

The Shining (1980)

Stephen King famously dislikes Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of his haunted hotel novel, but King’s quibbles with the screen translation aside, The Shining just works. There’s something unearthly about it, which explains why the film has spawned decades of analysis and even conspiracy theories. For a film that takes place at a resort in a very real place like Colorado (albeit it one with a less-haunted history), it retains the feeling that it was beamed in from another, creepier planet.

An American Werewolf in London (1981)

Some films start with a great idea, and then just get every little piece of the execution right along the way, from the casting to the humor to the horror visuals to the soundtrack. An American Werewolf in London is one of those films. It’s just flawlessly put together from start to finish, which means every little piece of this relatively simple story gets to shine in uncanny ways.

The Thing (1982)

John Carpenter cemented the slasher genre with Halloween, but while that film is possibly his most influential, it’s not his best in terms of sheer terror craft. That honor goes to The Thing, a paranoid creature feature masterpiece about isolation, resentment, and the very nature of fear. Rob Bottin’s legendary creature effects, the ensemble cast, and Carpenter’s own finely tuned sense of human nature all come together to create one of the most rewatchable and consistently frightening films ever made.

The Fly (1986)

No one else makes horror films quite like David Cronenberg. It’s not just that he’s the king of body horror. It’s that there’s a sense of fascination with the ways in which we as a species can change, grow, and even destroy ourselves which gives his filmography the sense of being one long, gleefully devilish experiment. The Fly, featuring great lead performances from Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis, is perhaps the purest expression of this feeling, and the result is the best body horror movie of all time.

The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

Directed with peerless intensity by Jonathan Demme and starring the brilliant duo of Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins, The Silence of the Lambs gets lumped in with the thrillers far too often, maybe because it’s that rare scary movie to be taken seriously by the Academy. But despite all the trappings of crime thrillers around its narrative, it’s still near-mythic story of a woman who must use one monster to catch another, more terrifying one, and when those monsters come out to play, it’s a deeply frightening experience indeed. Horror can, and should, claim it as its own.

Scream (1996)

Wes Craven knew all the slasher rules. He’d played by them himself, several times, so when he took on Kevin Williamson’s brilliant script for Scream, he was able to both deliver the goods and subvert everything we thought we know about a well-trod horror formula. It’s been 25 years, and the result of this collaboration is still one of the smartest, most fun horror films ever, not to mention one of the most influential.

Let the Right One In (2008)

One thing you can’t ever get over about Let the Right One In is how unbelievably, relentlessly beautiful it is. Whether director Tomas Alfredson is filming an outdoor snowscape or a hospital room, there’s tremendous care put into each and every moment, a patience to the film that shines through even when the pace picks up. That means that even when things get horrific — and they do get horrific — you remain transfixed, mesmerized by the careful power of this unforgettable horror romance.

Get Out (2017)

When it comes to talking about the greatest anything of all time, people get concerned about recency bias. There’s a sense that we don’t have enough context to understand the impact of something after just a few years, so there’s no use lumping it in with something that’s had decades to work its magic. That’s a fair point, but when it comes to Jordan Peele’s horror debut, two things are inarguably clear: One, Get Out is a great film featuring wonderful tension, rich symbolism, and great performances. And two, Get Out changed horror. That’s obvious even five years after its release. This film was a clear inflection point in the horror landscape, not just for Peele, but for many up-and-coming filmmakers who would follow him into the “social horror” arena. It’s a masterpiece, and its influence already packs a whallop.

Few films achieve the enduring impact of The sixth Sense, the psychological horror classic that launched M.Night Shyamalan to international success and made us fear going to the bathroom in the middle of the night for a long time. It was released almost a quarter of a century ago, in 1999, a year considered one of the best in the history of cinema due to the number of exemplary works that swept the box office (The Matrix, Fight Club, American Beauty, among other).

However, no matter how much time passes, we all remember the day we saw her for the first time. Above all, we remember the experience of feeling vulnerable, completely delivered and with our cinephile souls open-mouthed when the story revealed its great surprise. A spoiler alert defining twist because you can’t say it out loud. Not now, not ever… And it’s not just me saying it, it’s Shyamalan’s word.

?Never. Never in this life.” It is the recommendation that even now, decades later, the director maintains for those who want to talk about the end of one of his films. Shyamalan is currently promoting his new genre production, knock at the door, and during his time on the Graham Norton program he talked about the importance of maintaining a pact of secrecy as a cinephile society being considerate of future generations.

?I was at the premiere [de su nueva película] and there were young influencers who told me ‘we just saw your movie Signs, it’s incredible’. I mean, they saw her yesterday. There is a new generation that is going to see these movies. So don’t say anything! Don’t tell your children anything, let them see them!? However, not everyone applied this lesson throughout all these years. Sarah Michelle Gellarthe eternal Buffy, was sitting next to him in the show and spontaneously represented all those clueless people who ruined the viewing experience. The sixth Sense for the first time.

The actress, who is also promoting her new work –Wolf Pack-, she said that she screwed up so much by revealing to her husband Freddie Prinze Jr. the great surprise of the film, that he spent a long time without seeing a movie with her. ?We had been into the movie for 20 minutes and I said something without realizing it. ‘Oh, that’s?’ and my husband hasn’t seen a movie with me again in 15 years.”

“And with all the reason of the world”, The director responded with a scowl.

The disappointment that Freddie Prinze Jr. experienced was something experienced by many viewers over the years. Because not everyone was as careful as Shyamalan asks when talking about the film.

How to forget that phenomenon, right? The sixth Sense it generated conversation in offices, schools, television programs, radio, on the street… Anyone who had seen it in theaters, back in 1999, felt the urgency to talk about that ending. And more than one of them missed the revelation, out of enthusiasm, selfishness or oversight.

Or, who hasn’t heard someone say the phrase: “they ruined my ending” because some inconsiderate person released the outcome without taking into account the experience of the other? Or what a movie like as if it were the first time with Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler will reveal it without anesthesia in a sequence? What’s more, there are Reddit forums and other platforms where it is discussed which series, program or person ruined the end of The sixth Sense. I myself remember being in a conversation at the time and feeling the urge to stop someone who almost let loose in front of a group that hadn’t seen it yet.

Talk about The sixth Sense It is an exercise in generous conscience. And it is that although there are many films with final surprises that require the same caution –Common Suspects (The Usual Suspects), Seven, The Naked Truth, Fight Club, The Others, The Origin and many others- The sixth Sense defined the stray spoiler alert.

It was the film that made an entire generation more aware than ever of the importance of maintaining secrecy. Even still, so long after. To follow this pact of universal silence that we sealed (and without knowing it) the day we saw her for the first time. I personally believe that although many clueless people ruined the experience for hundreds of viewers, The sixth Sense it defined how we talk about spoilers and reveals. Not only with the journalistic practice of adding disclaimers (or warnings) in articles, but also by applying a rigorous question before talking about a movie or chapter in its entirety: ?have you seen it yet??

I completely agree with M. Night Shyamalan. It will never be a good time to talk about the end of The sixth Sense, unless we make sure that those who can hear us already saw it.

Unfortunately, social networks like Twitter constantly threaten this practice, having become a minefield of spoilers that we have to flee from every time a popular series is released on streaming services. There are many users who feel the urgency of dumping surprises, revelations and plots -with photos and videos included- when a chapter has been released, without taking into account the experience of the rest. A consequence of modern immediacy. The urge to be part of the conversation. To be the first, to go viral. And this happened to many of us. Since the revelation of Jon Snow’s tragic fate in the fifth season of Game of Thrones, to the surprise ending in the second season of Only murders in the buildingto everything that is happening in The Last of Us. The spoilers are constant and without any kind of warning. And, consequently, we have had to adopt the practice of avoiding entering this platform until we saw the new chapter of our favorite series.

Therefore, taking advantage of Shyamalan’s words, it is a good time to remind those of us who experience the phenomenon of The sixth Sense at the end of the 90s, that we have a key experience to pass the lesson to future generations. The lesson to shut up or at least ask first, as a courtesy from moviegoer to moviegoer.

The end of a kidnapping is only the beginning of your investigation. Two inspectors will have to advance alone in a country stopped by the state of alarm. (Netflix)

I infest is an upcoming Spanish film by Patxi Amezcua (Seventh) that takes us back to the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic. Isak Férriz and Iria del Río give life to two detectives who have been pursuing the clues of a case since the first day the state of emergency was declared in Spain. The title will arrive this month on the Netflix catalog.

?March 2020. On the first day of the state of emergency, two detectives must go to a small Asturian mining town where a young woman who had been missing for months appeared. As the world falls apart and personal tragedy strikes on all sides, researchers realize that the virus may not be the only dark force at work,” the official premise reads.

It is a disturbing mystery thriller that focuses on the reappearance of a young woman who was put to death for months, but the fact hides a dark secret from the mining areas of Asturias. Parallel to this, the police officers in charge of this investigation will have to deal with the complications of the context to get to the truth.

Part of the original idea of I infest It is sustained in portraying the realism that was experienced during the global crisis due to the spread of COVID-19. The virus, originating in Wuhan (China), caused the world population to live in isolation for long months amid uncertainty due to the lack of a vaccine and pain due to sudden losses.

the entrance of James Gunn As the new person in charge of the future of DC, he comes with the promise of remodeling to have a more organized and consistent plan. On the other hand, Gunn being more of a creative figure than an executive, it is hoped that, despite the plan, he will dare to maintain what has been one of the most interesting aspects of the ramshackle DC Universe: freedom of action for those who make the films.

Even though it works against the tonal consistency Marvel has achieved, there really was something refreshing about any DC movie being able to come out anyway. Qualitatively and stylistically. An opportunity even for young voices from being able to try things even within the constrained mold of the action blockbuster. Thanks to this, even proposals such as ‘Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of Harley Quinn)‘.

fly free like a bird

Newly added to the Netflix catalog, the film makes one of the best uses of margot robbie like a renewed and charismatic Harley Quinn who has completely changed the public perception of the character. An action film that seeks to present and take advantage of a new female superteam (which already put the expected public sectors against it), although it really is less choral than it appears.

Introducing characters like Black Canary or Huntress and taking advantage of some supporting characters from the Batman universe like Black Mask or Victor Zsasz, the film by the relatively young Cathy Yan makes a spectacle of action and criminal underworlds that, although expected or predictable, works fabulously because of the emphasis it places on certain aspects. Like the action, shot with some clarity and quite physical forcefulness as it did not need too much supernatural enhancement.

Minor characters that help give it a scale at street level that is always more appreciated than when you opt for more pompous and ornate shows that then go nowhere, like ‘Black Adam‘. The movie also takes advantage of an R-rated for adults to loosen up a bit and make a good use of violence in fightswhich is then contrasted with an explosive use of colours.

‘Birds of prey’: violent and crazy

I said before that the film is less choral than it appears, and it is because the entire film is marked by the perspective of Robbie’s character. Not only for the narration, but also for a carousel of tones that can be appreciated, even in the action or in the sense of humor. Those jumps between beastly fighting, silly jokes, or even cartoon segments come pretty close to experiencing the world through the characters of Harley Quinn, as extreme as crazy.

They are small details, like passing a hair clip in the middle of a fight, where you can tell that there is someone offering a different perspective on the genre. Although it follows the patterns of the scheme of this class of blockbusters, the invoice is funny and nice, not boring even with its hops and its intense colors. Just the kind of propositions that never hurt and shouldn’t be left over in whatever future Gunn plans. The ‘joker‘ are fine, but you shouldn’t abuse so much self-importance either.

James Gunn and Peter Safran have ushered in a new phase for the DC film and television universe, one that will be born entirely separate from what has come before. There will be new stories and renewed stars for the upcoming movies and series, but what about the ones we already know? The releases of productions for the cinema that were made before are still underway, we will tell you which ones they are.

Shazam! The fury of the gods

Zachary Levy reprises his role as Shazam alongside Asher Angel as the human version of Billy Batson. It is a continuation of the original film and focuses on the family of adopted children who now also make up a group of superheroes, each one of them with different powers. In this sequel, they will have to face the Daughters of Atlas, whom they must stop in their attempt to destroy the world. It will hit theaters on March 16, 2023.

Flash

Never before has Flash had his own solo movie and this will be the first in movie history. Argentine Andy Muschietti directs Ezra Miller ? an actor who debuted in the role in Batman vs. Superman? in this production that took some time to materialize due to delays and creative differences from its previous directors. The story will be based on the arc of flash point, one of the most famous in the DC universe in comics. It can be seen from June 15 on the big screen and although it is not officially from the new world planned by Gunn, it could be a good starting point for this one.

aquaman and the lost kingdom

the successful Aquaman, released in 2018, will release its second part at the end of this year. Jason Momoa returns to lead him as the king of Atlantis and he is joined by Amber Heard, Willem Dafoe, Patrick Wilson, Dolph Lundgren, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Temuera Morrison and Nicole Kidman. It is directed by James Wan (The spell), like the first film. It will premiere on December 24.

Blue Beetle

Xolo Maridueña, remembered for acting in Cobra Kai, proves his action skills again in this film centered on Jaime Reyes. He is the first Latino character to star in a production within the DC Extended Universe. In this adventure, we will learn about his origins and how he managed to become one of the glorious superheroes that comics contain. Its release in theaters will be on August 17.

Joker: Folie à Deux

A few weeks ago, Todd Phillips revealed the first look at Joaquin Phoenix incarnated as the Joker for the sequel. The cast will also include the participation of Lady Gaga, American singer and actress who will give life to Harley Quinn. It is a proposal with a musical focus, so there will be songs and choreographies, an aspect that differs from the first installment that was characterized by its harshness when capturing Gotham City. It will arrive in October 2024.

As part of Gunn’s announcements, it was also confirmed that Robert Pattinson will mark his return as the Dark Knight in the direct sequel. Also, within this universe, Joker, Riddler and the anti-heroine Catwoman appear. For now, it is unknown what the plot of the second installment will be.

The top winners were among the buzziest of this year’s festival, from “Fair Play” to “Past Lives” and more.

This year, the Sundance Film Festival returned in-person events with a vengeance. After two straight mostly virtual editions, the festival got back to almost-normal with packed crowds squeezing into the shuttles and trudging up and down Main Street. The festival also allowed its films, at distributors? discretion, to screen virtually on its platform for accredited press who were still covering Sundance remotely.

That meant, in conducting our annual critics survey this year, some films may simply have been seen by more journalists than others. But it is striking that in the final tally, some buzzy films that were available virtually the entire time did not make the cut, while some titles that played exclusively in-person in Park City ranked high.

This time, a record 367 critics voted in the IndieWire Critics Survey for Sundance 2023. The films with the most support were Chloe Domont?s ?Fair Play,? which was on the online Sundance streaming platform and sold for a reported $20 million to Netflix, followed by Celine Song?s ?Past Lives,? which was an A24 title since its origination and only played in-person in Park City.

?Fair Play? topped the Best Film category, with 163 of the 367 critics voting for it. Each critic was asked to select their top three films, with first-place choices being assigned three points, second-place choices two points, and third-place choices one point. Nineteen more critics voted for ?Fair Play? overall than for ?Past Lives.? However, ?Past Lives? received more overall No. 1 votes: Thirty-seven to the 32 for ?Fair Play.? That suggests major enthusiasm for Song?s film, which next plays in competition at Berlinale next month.

Both ?Fair Play? and ?Past Lives? are first-time features, and, unsurprisingly, ranked the same way in the Best First Film category (which only asked for one selection as opposed to three). ?Fair Play? also topped Best Directing and Best Screenwriting. ?Past Lives? came in fourth for Best Directing and third for Best Screenwriting.

As of publication time, the films without distributors in the Top 10 are ?Magazine Dreams,? (No. 3 on that list as well as on Best Directing, and No. 8 in Best Screenwriting) and ?Eileen,? both of which were considered hot acquisition titles at the start of the festival.

?You Hurt My Feelings?

courtesy of Sundance Institute/A24

Along with ?Past Lives,? A24 titles in the Top 10 films include ?You Hurt My Feelings? and ?All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt.? Searchlight has ?Rye Lane? and ?Theater Camp,? while Neon?s ?Infinity Pool? (at No. 9 on the Best Film List, but No. 2 at Best Directing) is already in theaters for the general public to see, and MUBI acquired ?Passages.?

Given the number of respondents this time around, we were able to pull out of the Best Film category what the top five would be for just films in the World Cinema Dramatic competition. All received fewer votes than the Top 10 listed under Best Film, but still were focal points of enthusiasm worth mentioning: World Cinema Grand Jury Prize winner ?Scrapper,? as well as ?Shayda,? ?Mamacruz,? ?Heroic,? and ?Slow? were those top five.

The voting for Best Documentary followed the same process for Best Film (though those polled could have voted for documentaries in the Best Film category as well). Two clearly stood ahead of the pack: ?Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie? and ?20 Days in Mariupol? garnered the most votes, from the Premieres and World Documentary Competition sections respectively. Of the Top 10 Documentaries the critics selected, three were from Premieres, two from NEXT, three from the U.S. Documentary Competition, and two from the World Documentary Competition.

Critical consensus out of Sundance can be an unpredictable barometer for future success. Last year?s survey winner, ?Cha Cha Real Smooth,? scored a big deal with Apple out of the festival but failed to garner much traction in awards season; the year prior, however, the survey was topped by two future Oscar winners, ?CODA,? and ?Judas and the Black Messiah.?

Which DC movies are canon for James Gunn? Here are the 6 tapes of the old DCEU that are still valid for the future of the saga.

James Gunn, the renowned film director, is the current head of DC movies. Despite yesterday’s presentation, there are certain doubts about which projects from the past are going to remain valid and which will cease to be canon. With his experience in the superhero genre and his unique style of storytelling, Gunn hopes to bring a new breath to the DCU and attract a wider audience. Fans are excited to see what Gunn has in mind for these films and how his vision will affect the franchise. DC Comics as a whole.

These are the 6 DC movies that are canon for James Gunn!

The Suicide Squad (2021)

The movie that started Gunn’s relationship with DC was The Suicide Squad.. A pseudo-sequel turned into a soft reboot of the poorly received Suicide Squad (2016). It seems that this is one of the films that will continue to be canon for James Gunn after the announcement of Waller, which will mean the return of Viola Davis as Amanda Waller after his multiple appearances in the DCEU. It has also been confirmed that the project will include the members of ?Team Peacemaker?, most of whom were introduced in The Suicide Squad. Therefore, this decision makes a lot of sense.

Birds of Prey (2020)

The Suicide Squad also connects to several DC movies, most notably through Harley Quinn’s margot robbie. Although Robbie’s character remains one of the DCEU’s biggest hits and thus it’s likely he’ll remain in the DCU, it’s unclear if every one of his film appearances will remain canon. Birds of Prey would fit perfectly into James Gunn’s DCU without too many gaps and, being an essential part of Harley Quinn’s story, would go a long way in establishing her character in the new franchise.

Shazam (2019) and its sequel are DC movies that are canon for James Gunn

The largely unconnected nature of the DCEU makes the Shazam franchise easy to recast as the DCU. During his announcement, James Gunn referred to the Shazam movies starring Zachary Levi as being in his own universe, having had very little connection to any of the other DC movies in recent years. Gunn seems to indicate that Shazam and his movies will be recontextualized to become part of the DCU entirely.with this change likely having little to no impact on any of the films in the franchise.

Blue Beetle

Though audiences have only gotten a glimpse of Blue Beetle’s design so far, the character’s first film will hit theaters in August 2023. The very limited discourse surrounding the film led to rumors that it would potentially follow in the footsteps of Blue Beetle. Batgirl with a late cancellation. But James Gunn has dispelled such theories once and for all. In his announcement, Gunn enthusiastically detailed the character of Blue Beetle while explicitly referring to the young superhero as part of the DC movies..

Flash

Despite being weighed down by the controversy surrounding its star, The Flash remains vital to the reboot of DC movies. The film, which has been stuck in development hell for years, stars Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen as he travels the Multiverse, meeting several familiar heroes along the way. Jame Gunn confirmed that The Flash “rests entirely in the DC Universe,” possibly confirming theories that the film will take a Flashpoint storyline to reboot the franchise and seemingly dispelling rumors of Miller’s goodbye.

Aquaman (2018) and its sequel are DC movies that are canon for James Gunn

As a climax to the DC movies for 2023 and as the last DCEU movie before James Gunn, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom seems to continue to be part of the DCU canon. Gunn gave very few details about the upcoming Aquaman sequel, other than indicating that it will usher in the first batch of DCU projects in 2024 and beyond. This news comes amid reports that Jason Momoa would be re-elected as Lobo.

The Academy recently made its nominations for the Oscar Awards. Here are my favorite movies from 2022.

The Fablemans

This is Steven Spielberg?s semi-autobiographical film about his childhood and introduction to the cinema. With charming performances, ?The Fablemans? has a Lifetime movie vibe. Excellent set design and cinematography tap the landscapes and brightly colored optimism of the fifties. The family?s small everyday moments capture the drama of a tight-knit household. Moving performances by Michelle Williams and Judd Hirsch highlight the movie, with both Oscar-nominated Williams in the lead actress category and Hirsch in supporting. Spielberg?s directing also gets an Oscar nod.

Avatar: The Way of Water

Making quite the box office splash at $2 billion, ?Avatar: The Way of Water? is a stunning study in technical and visual effects. Even if the story is a little manufactured, it?s the breathtaking details that makes the movie stand out. Its technical brilliance is no small achievement. Immersive visuals keep you focused on the enchanting world of Pandora until the ending credits. The film runs over three hours, but moviegoers don?t seem to mind. The epic is directed by James Cameron, who gave us ?Titanic.? Cameron didn?t get an Oscar nomination, but the visual effects team did.

 Elvis

Austin Butler, the endearing towhead from Nickelodeon, plays Elvis in the role of a lifetime and overachieves. Director Baz Luhrmann imprints the story in a brash, overwhelming way reminiscent of his other films like ?Moulin Rouge!? It?s a biographical portrait of the King and his rise and fall from stardom. Shout out to the Oscar-nominated makeup team for their Elvis transformation. Tom Hanks plays Colonel Parker, the manipulating manager, or rather, Tom Hanks plays Tom Hanks. The blended singing voices of Butler and Elvis created a memorable soundtrack.

Everything Everywhere
All At Once

Having received 11 Academy Award nominations, this sleeper hit woke the Oscar voters. ?Everything Everywhere All At Once? shatters the standard idea of genres and inspires a different film direction. Michelle Yeoh showcases her range by portraying three different versions of her character Evelyn Wang. Ke Huy Quan and Stephanie Hsu join Yeoh with scintillating performances. Oscar-nominated directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (the Daniels) have turned classic filmmaking upside down.

 To Leslie

?To Leslie? only earned $27,000 at the box office. The film?s simplicity turns a cliched ?alcoholic? movie into a heart-rendering portrait of Leslie. Andrea Riseborough plays the lead character, who won the lottery six years ago, only to squander the money and live in squalor. Hitting rock bottom prompts Leslie to return to her hometown, but family and friends shun her. While this seems like an Oscar-bait redemption arc, she?s not twelve-stepping her way into sobriety but quietly reflecting on her life. After realizing the emotional damage she?s caused, particularly to her son, Leslie starts her journey to sobriety. Brilliantly acted by Riseborough, who should  win an Oscar and every other award. She?s that good.

Women Talking

This under-the-radar film is another Oscar-nominated movie for best picture directed by Sarah Polley. ?Women Talking? is based on the novel ?Women Talking? (2018) by Canadian writer Miriam Toews. Toews? story is based on true events in a remote Mennonite community in Bolivia, where over a hundred girls and women are raped in their sleep. While the men are away, the Mennonite women gather to discuss their trauma and how to confront their rapists. Compelling dialogue and thoughtful direction are the film?s hallmarks. The disturbing and raw content is mitigated by solid performances by Claire Foy, Jessie Buckley, Michelle McLeod, Kate Halle and Judith Ivey.

 Tár

Cate Blanchett plays Lydia Tár, the maestro and problem child of the Berlin Philharmonic. Blanchett plays an all-in, demanding and emotionally exhausted conductor who is starting to see the consequences of her behavior. Thanks to Cate Blanchett?s thunderous performance and Todd Field?s unwavering direction, both are nominated for best actress and director, respectively. ?Tár? also received a best picture nod, and the movie delivers with never-ending intensity. Lydia is a fictional character, but you wouldn?t know it with the abundant amount of real facts (composers, songs and orchestras) which blend with the fictional story.

Motion pictures and songs seem to create a combination similar to peanut butter and jelly ? one highlighting the other. Some of the best movie songs are found in some of the greatest motion pictures. However, mixing the two is an elaborate process, requiring a lot of creative ingenuity. Some of the best movie songs of all time can stay in line with the movie and make sure that the action comes first.

Music is a spotlight ? shining bright on the story being told. Catchy songs highlight the action that happens in the scene. They dictate the action and emotions. For example, some of the best movie theme songs, like ?Lose Yourself? from 8 Mile, set a very serious tone for the movie. Also, a song from a movie acts like a nostalgic tool, reminding us about the film from a few notes alone.

The good thing about movie soundtracks is that they use audio cues to evoke the needed emotions. Since there are a lot of famous movie songs to choose from, we have compiled some of the best ones below. Some of these might already be in your playlist, so be sure to upvote them. On the other hand, if there is another song you would like to share, comment it down below.

Rocky Balboa and the group Survivor seem to fit each other like two puzzle pieces. ?Eye Of The Tiger? came to reality when Queen, the music group, refused permission to use ?Another One Bites the Dust? for Rocky III.
